- This paper focuses on how landscape is represented through my experience of displacement, migrating from England to Australia. In order to investigate this I have researched historical aspects of landscape art and the influence of the Sublime with a focus on contemporary aesthetics. I have explored the concept of displacement, which is inevitably linked with memory and cultural identity. The means of expressing oneself through the landscape is explored through the use of semiotics and appropriation, which can be associated with a personal narrative. I believe that for artists engaged with self expression there is a continual innate conversation taking place. It is through my artistic endeavours that I am able to explore and express feelings, emotions and thoughts generated by personal family traumas, cultural ambiguity, identity issues and geographical displacement, to find some cathartic resolution. My art practice endeavours to fulfil this need for a new strength and vigour and to harness a restorative response as a key driver.
